About NHI

WELCOME TO NATIONAL HEART INSTITUTE

The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step…... And that step was taken in 1981 when National Heart Institute (NHI) opened its portals as the Nation’s First Dedicated Cardiac Care Institute and the First Private Sector Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory outside the ‘Developed World’ at that time.

Brainchild of the legendary physician Dr. Paul Dudley White and the doyenne of Cardiology in India Dr. S. Padmavati, NHI was inaugurated by the late Prime Minister, Mrs. Indira Gandhi, as the Clinical Research and Medical Care Delivery Wing of All India Heart Foundation (AIHF). The mandate of this stand-alone facility was to provide treatment to people with paying capacity and use the surplus, thus generated, for the treatment of the poor. Today this NABH and NABL Accredited Hospital's name is synonymous with quality cardiac care.

AIHF – Background

On the 5th of May 1962, the “All India Heart Foundation” was established, mainly due to the efforts of the first woman cardiologist of India, Padma Vibhushan Awardee, Dr. S. Padmavati. She was greatly influenced by her guru Dr. Paul Dudley White, who sought to transform the way medical science catered to the needs of a common person.

AIHF has been affiliated with the World Heart Federation (WHF), and its predecessor International Society and Federation of Cardiology (ISFC) since 1963 and has been a Member of its Board of Directors, its Research Epidemiology Committee, and its Adhoc committee on Rheumatic Fever/Rheumatic Heart Disease (RF/RHD). AIHF is a member of the Asia Pacific Hospice Palliative Care Network (APHN) and Dr. S. Padmavati was its President from 2006 to 2008. Dr. Padmavati was the First Secretary.

CSR PROGRAMMES

ROTARY "GIFT OF LIFE" PROGRAMMES

Approximately 8 of every 1000 children in India suffer from birth heart defects (Congenital Heart Disease CHD). One of the chronic diseases, therefore, which accounts for almost 20 percent of infant mortality in India is congenital heart disease. Similarly, almost 1-5% of children develop a rheumatic fever before the age of 15 years (Disease of the heart valves). However, facilities for complex heart surgery in children in our country are very limited. Either the children do not have access to treatment, or they do not have the financial resources to meet the hefty costs of surgery. Considering the fact that 80% of medical care facility is in the hands of the private sector in India, Rotary International approached National Heart Institute, New Delhi in the year 2006 for a humanitarian partnership to save the lives of these unfortunate children.
